Why Does Adoption Have to Be So Expensive?

February 3, 2012 //  by Sam McLure

Have you ever asked yourself this question?  Have you ever looked at a family like the Portis’ of Montgomery, Alabama and thought, “Wow, it’s so great that they are adding to their family through adoption!  It’s too bad adoption is so expensive.  It must not be God’s will for us.”

We’ll I’ve got some good news for you!  Adding to your family through adoption doesn’t have to cost you one red cent.  It is absolutely free to adopt out of foster care.  That’s right, absolutely free.

Now, let me try to do some damage control.  That doesn’t mean that adoption isn’t costly.  In my previous blog, What is the Cost of Adoption?, I discussed the immense price that our Heavenly Father paid to offer us the right to become children of God.  In addition, adoption is costly, because bringing a child into your family through biology or adoption will cost you a lifetime of service and love.

“Therapeutic parenting” is a phrase thrown around sometimes by adoptive parents.  But, I’ve got news for you. All parenting is “therapeutic parenting.”  Because of Adam’s transgression of God’s law, we all inherit an utter rebellion to the King of Kings.  We come into this world with a gag reflex for the fountain of life.  Thus, God instructs us through Moses to teach our children the Scriptures diligently (Deuteronomy 6).

Want to learn more?  Want to take away the “if-only-it-didn’t-cost-so-much” excuse?  Check out Children’s Aid Society’s informational meeting on February 16.
