Grandparent adoptions are a “both and.” They are both beautiful and challenging. It is both a blessing when a grandparent shows sacrificial love in raising and caring for their grandchild and a difficulty when they believed they were done raising children while they are a generation older. It is both beautiful that the child has found a refuge in the home of their grandparents and it can be difficult due to the circumstances of their own child.
For whatever reason the grandparents are choosing to adopt their grandchildren, it does not diminish the impact and love that they have for them. As more and more grandparents are raising their grandchildren, many are finding themselves working longer and having less savings for retirement. This can create huge levels of unexpected stress for the grandparents as they reassume the financial and emotional responsibilities of a parent at this later stage in life. For example, even things as simple as needing to buy formula or diapers can be more challenging while on a fixed income. Raising children is always a challenge, but raising grandchildren comes with more complications and obstacles.
On the other hand, raising a grandchild brings indescribable happiness. It is a wonderful opportunity to step up and care for the family that has already been created. Children need stability, love, and support, and these grandparents who answer the call have the opportunity to maintain or reestablish a stable living environment for their grandchildren. It is important to make this environment finalized through adoption so that the child can feel at peace, have a sense of stability, and experience permanency. This finalization through the legal system secures and protects that relationship while bringing a sense of belonging to the child. Additionally, adoption has a significant impact on inheritance, insurance, taxes, and other areas that indirectly impact the child. Adopting a grandchild is both a deep act of love and challenging legal process.
