Since 1984, National Professional Social Work Month has been nationally recognized. Through a Joint Resolution of Congress and proclamation of President Ronald Reagan our country has set aside March as a deliberate consideration point to recognize and honor our social workers.
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has been celebrating social work month since 1963. Their theme this is year is: Uplift. Defend. Transform.
According to NASW
The 2026 Social Work Month theme honors the prime mission of the Social Work profession – to enhance human well-being, meet the basic human needs of all people, and put special attention on the needs and empowerment of people are vulnerable, oppressed and living in poverty. …
Social Workers are on the front lines, helping individuals and communities so they can overcome personal and societal challenges and even thrive. Social Workers are also adept at bringing people and communities together … so they can find common ground and work to improve the welfare of all.
There are more than 810,000 Social Workers in the United States and it is one of the fastest growing professions in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Social workers play a pivotal role in adoption and foster care. Social workers conduct homestudies, parental assessments, and make recommendations to the Court. Social workers are employed through private agencies, independently, and the State Department of Human Resources.
Alabama Social Workers are guided and bound by a Code of Ethics.
For example, Section 4.04 touches on Dishonesty, Fraud, and Deception
Social workers should not participate in, condone, or be associated with dishonesty, fraud, or deception.
Also, Section 4.05 on Impairment states that
Social workers should not allow their own personal problems, psychosocial distress, legal problems, substance abuse, or mental health difficulties to interfere with their professional judgment and performance or to jeopardize the best interests of people for whom they have a professional responsibility.
