There is no right or wrong here. Fostering and adoption are very complicated processes with each situation being unique and different. While the desire to adopt is such a great trait to have, the main question should be what the best interest for the child is.

Foster Care

The goal of foster care is to provide a safe place for a child who is in need of one. It is a place of refuge for a child who does not have one. To be a safe space for a child. While there is no right or wrong in regards to going into fostering with the goal of wanting to adopt, what is right, however, is wanting to do the best thing for the child no matter the circumstance.

Fostering With the Hope of Adoption

Most of the time, the goal of foster care is for reunification with the biological parents. But sometimes, it is adoption. It is not wrong to go into fostering with the hope of adopting a child. But there needs to be an understanding that you are fostering for the child’s needs and their best interest rather than your own. Sometimes reunification is in the best interest of the child and sometimes it’s not. As long as you are going into fostering a child with the mindset that you are doing it for the child, it is okay to have a hope in the back of your mind that adoption is also a goal. And it’s okay to have the goal in the back of your mind as long as it’s not getting in the way of what’s in the best interest of the child.

That being the mindset, there are going to be challenges that come with fostering a child. Fostering is a system that breeds uncertainty. It is a world full of some of the highest highs but also some of the deepest lows. There can be so many beautiful moments, but it can also bring some heartache.

Every fostering situation is different, and every situation requires a different plan. It is not wrong to want to adopt a foster child. However, the best interest of the child always needs to be the most important factor in a foster care case and needs to be the first priority.
